This unique recordings finds Coltrane in a Naval Base in Hawaii in 1946 (!), when he was just 20 years old. He had been called into the United States Navy in 1945, and when his superiors found out that he was a musician, they assigned him to the Navy band. He was shipped to Hawaii, where he performed on clarinet for marches and dances, practising on alto during his spare time. He was released in June 1946 and on July 13 of that year participated with some fellow musicians from the Navy Band in this strange recording session.

Tracks 1-8 recorded on July 13 1946, tracks 9-15 recorded live in June 1954.

Coltrane at the piano! The only existing recording of Coltrane at the piano appears on After the Rain on this live recording from 1963. McCoy Tyner was late that day so Coltrane played the first three tunes and most of the fourth in the unusual trio format of tenor sex, bass and drums! The album also contains rare live recordings of Up ´Gainst the Wall and It´s Easy to Remember. Enjoy!

This record from March 1963 is one of Trane´s more unusual, not only because it features Johnny Hartmans deep, deep voice on vocals but also because the tunes are mostly ballads. It was recorded between Impressions and Dear Old Stockholm (if we don´t take any live recordings into considerations) and stands as a clear break between those albums. Maybe it was Impulse´s in house producer Bob Thiele who wanted to make Coltrane more commercial or he wanted to boost Hartmans career - who knows? But it turned out to be a really nice and soft record!

Here is another live recording from the Birdland in New York, this time from 1963 when Eric Dolphy had left the working group. However, only the three first songs are recorded live, the last two are recorded at Van Gelder Studio. John had this to say about the tune Alabama: " It represents, musically, something that I saw down there translated into music from inside me." Just listen to overwhelming sadness of the tune and the thunderstorm of change Elvin Jones is building up with his drums - a really powerfull song!

This was Archie Shepps first album on Impulse! label, realesed in 1964. It was John coltrane who persuaded Bob Thiele (the in house producer at Impulse!) to record Shepp. This is how Shepp recalls how he after months of nagging was allowed into the studio: "Let me put it this way: When I did that recording, Bob Thiele had made the stipulation that all the songs had to written by John. I had to use Trane´s music. That was the deal... In a way, he made those stipulations because he was hoping my ego would make me say, "Well, I only want to do my own thing, Bob, so let´s forget it," because he really didn´t want to record me." And as you can see Trane is watching over Shepps shoulder on the album cover. However after this record, Bob Thieles fears about Shepps abilities vanished...

This album from 1965 was quite controversal when it first was released. But as critic Gary Giddens later recalls: "I think Fire Music is one of the really courageous albums of the sixties. God, I love that record! And it´s a surprising record. You listen to it now and except the Malcom poem, which I like a lot, it´s full of melody and fun and dance rhytms. What the hell was everybody so frightened of? They were frightened of the verbiage!"

This album from 1957 was the first Coltrane album I heard. I had decided to start listen to jazz and the name Blue Train was something I recognized. The first time I listened to it I thought "Hey man. I don´t think I want to hear this" and my friend said that not even a person on crack could dance to this! But I gave Coltrane a second chance and this time I thought "Hey man! I think I want to hear more of this!". After that second chance I was hooked on the Trane!

I think this album from 1961 is one of the more popular ones among my friends. It was the first album John recorded for Impulse! label and it contain several good tunes, however it is not my favorite. Of course, who can resist the beutifull sound of the classic Greensleeves? The underground railway that is mentioned in the second track refers to the escape route run away slaves took from the American south to the north. Even though it is not my favorite record I must agree that it is very good indeed!
